Lots of walking the last 2 days but had a wonderful time just taking in the Paris culture and the people within. It’s a fabulous place – nothing like our vast shopping centres all under one roof, everything here is within tiny shops all set within mostly the ground floor of the hundreds of beautiful buildings around the city.
The tourists of course are everywhere! Us included I guess. There are cafe’s, boulangeries (bakeries), cheese shops, chocolate shops, patisseries and more cafe’s! The done thing is to join in at the people watching seats in front of all the cafe’s and just enjoy doing nothing – lined up with everyone else.
Coffee is STRONG – asking for a double espresso gets us a half cup of coffee – an American Coffee ‘might’ get us a full cup but a couple of times it still hasn’t! While we had breakfast today, people wandered in, had their espresso shot of coffe and 2 minutes later were on their way.
Have to admit though, even when we;ve been lagging from all our walking, a shot of the good old espresso does wonders!
Wandered through the Latin Quarter on the left bank yesterday and ended up in the Parthenon. I always thought that was in Greece having been to Athens but seems there’s one here as well! Made our way down to the crypt and came across the crypts of Pierre and Madame Curie – the only 2 ‘French’ names we really knew of all those there. A fascinating place though underneath the Parthenon.
It’s been cold and wet here again today and I’ve had my red coat on plus rain jacket. Ventured into the subway system today and headed out to the ‘Porte de Clignancourt’ markets – apparently they are seemingly world famous but we’ve never heard of them and they were just another open air market of good leathers, shoes, bags, etc – reasonable stuff but nothin to write home about.
The subway for a Saturday was absolutely jam packed! So uch so that at one point I jumped into the doorway and wasn’t sure Kemm was going to make it in behind me – he did, but talk about squashed!! There are just so many people in these big cities but volume counts for something as the train tickets are cheap!!
Ventured next to the Sacre Coeur and Montmatre artisty area for a wander and a bite to eat. Got out at one train station and found the ‘little train’ to take us up the hill to Sacre Coeur. People!!!! Ahhhhh!!!! It was still rainign of course and umbrellas and raincoats were the norm.
Had a bite to eat and headed home through the busy subway system again.
Heading out to dinner somewhere I guess for our last real night in Paris – tomorrow we head off on our Battlefield tour up north somewhere! Not sure how we’ll go WiFi wise so if you don’t hear from us for a couple of days – that’s why!
Au Revoir for now!
